That's rubbish. Provided they've been set up carefully, they should be pretty much as reliable as nomal induction systems

Maybe your thinking of Carbs? Slightly similar to Throttle bodies, but need to be setup every 6 months or so.
TB are ok, once their setup, they are setup.

only thing with TB is that you need to warm the engine up before setting off otherwise they run a bit rough to start with

Ummm, my car has a throttle body as standard and I've never known any problems, doesn't take any looking after at all and mine is not rough to start with, although I always get up to idle temp before thrashing it obviously

Having rough cold start depends on which engine management you have and how well it is set up.
I use DTA and its fine from cold, behaves like a standard car.

Same here - I'm on GEMS and once I've blipped the throttle a few times after starting her up, it's just like a standard car.

Standard throttle bodie.
BAsically theres 1 TB that all the air travels through, it then splits into 4 chambers (on a 4 cylinder car).
TB like Andys got, theres 1 TB per chamber, air is suck straight into the head giving optimum performance (along with fueling etc, hence why a good engine managment is needed).

As i say, you have 1 trupet for each chamber on teh engine. It provides direct access into the engine sucking in as much air as the engine can basically handle. More air+fuel = more power.
Engein manangement is there to sort out and setup this air/fuel ratio mixture.

Under hard throttle yeah it uses quite a lot. But if you drive it easily, fuel economy isn't much worse than standard.

On a long run I can get it much better.
