This morning, just after taking the car out whenever i braked slowly, there was a grinding noise, but under hard braking it was fine, then on the way home light braking seems fine.
What could this be? Just cold brakes?

Mine does this on and off. I think its the rear brakes, but theres still good tension in the hand brake so doubt they are worn out.

Sounds to me like you need new brake pads.
The grinding noise is the warning clip scraping the brake disc.

I've just had this problem, hadnt had new shoes on long, and was gettin an awful grinding noise, along with what looked like (and was) rusty deposits on my wheel... had it all apart today and the shoes have worn down completely to metal, need new drums/bearings, the lot... Whip your wheel off and check it I'd say.

yea thats right.
if you look at your brake discs before you get in your car, you'll see surface rust, no doubt the cold weather and wet roads are to blame, will soon disapear when ya get driving.
