I was surprised last night, some guy in a vw golf was right behind me egging me on. He tried to overtake me but as he got level i kept in 4th and revd to almost redline and pulled away from him on the inside.
I was quite surprised at this as i thought that all golfs were probably more powerful than my 1.2 16v corsa B.

1.6 is gutless but will still beat you top end no problem.
He was probably taking the piss out of you (no offence, but we do it to 1.2 owners all the time )

I have no 1.2 badge on my car... just says 16v.
For all he knows i *might* have had a 1.6 in there.

the slowest mark four golfs come with 1.4 and 1.6.
1.4 is an 8v with 75 bhp, 0-62 in 13.5, top end of 106mph
1.6 is an 8v with 105 bhp, 0-62 in 10.5, top end of 119mph
1.2 16v corsa's have either 65 or 75 brake and weigh alot less than the fat arsed golf, can see the corsa beating both the 1.4 and 1.6.

All Golfs III are slow.
If annyone knows the torque and BPH of the 2.0 GTI.
It is far below the C20XE, think even my 2.0 8V will be faster.
Here in Belgium, you see them a lot broke on the side of the road

8v arent as low powered as you might think, ive never seen one come off the rollers less than 130 bhp, and thats with a standard engine.

Did you say Golf 3, 4 or what ?
To answer your Q without affectation, the Golfs (3and 4) which are slower than a Corsa B 1.216v are
Golf 3 1.4 60 bhp
Golf 3 1.6 75 bhp
Golf 3 Diesel non turbo variety
Golf 4 Sdi and 1.4
the 1.6 later golfs were 100 bhp and about 10.5 secs to 60.
Golf Gti 20 8v's are good beefy engines, not mega fast but meaty enough for fast driving, aside from racing other hot hatches.

Then is the BPH the same, but the torque verry low.
I remember something like this I've read in a mag.
I thought then, damn the 20 16V is a lot slower than the opel red top

Its hard to tell if the guy was booting it or even if he had a clue how to make his car go fast or not. Some people ain't got a clue.
The otther day I was driving behind a Vectra 3.2 new type, Elite, (at first thought it might be the coppers) and he would pull off booting it and then slow down to a snails pace for bends and roundabouts then boot off, you could see him leaning over for the bends like he was doing 8g's pull or something. Mad.
