Loosen/tighten the nut when the strut leg is fitted to the car, and the car is sat on the ground. The cars weight should usually stop the top mount spinning as you undo the nut. also use a deep socket on it, I think its a 18mm.

you will need a swan neck ring spanner either 19mm or 3/4" and a small sock or spanner on the top nut.
i got a 3/4 swan neck spanner from a hardware bargain bin for £3.00
