I have just finished redoing my install today and now the dimming seems far worse than even before!!

Even at moderate volume the lights on hu are dimming noticably....

Whats the best (most ecnomical) course of action.

I can get a decent Phoeinix gold 1 farad cap pretty cheap.

Other than that wat to do? new battery or alternator?
How do u know what alternators will fit?

The same with batteries, mine is oldish and a 380amp halfords one, what shud i be looking at for an improvement????

Don't make the same mistake as me mate, go for a larger uprated battery first and if you've got the pennies, better altenator too.

A cap is no good at all if the juice isn't behind it to fill it up...

or a 1000amp yellow top But as trotty said, best thing to do is upgrade altenator first, then battery then cap (ABC rule)

Before doing them, try upgrading the big 3

The big 3 are fundamental, often over-looked wires that make big differences, especially when you upgrade your alternator

They are:

Alternator --> Battery Positive
Battery Negative --> Car Shell
Battery Negative --> Engine block

All these three wires exist, but they are designed for the standard car wiring. When you add large power consuming components (such as amps), you earth the amp to the shell. Well this current needs to connect to the battery, and does this via the batt neg --> car shell wire. If other electrical things are on (such as lights for example), these will also use this same batt neg --> shell wire, and therefore there is more current going through this wire than it was designed for.

The other two wires are really for when you have a better alternator, but can benefit with a standard alternator since the thicker a wire, the lower the resistance, and therefore less losses.

Dont forget when replacing the alternator --> battery positive to fuse it as close to the battery as possible. Although the standard wire doesnt seem to be fused, it does actually have a fuseable link.
