When i blip the throttle the revs drop and then go up it also has massive flat spots has ne one else had the same/ similar problems all help appreciated

yeah i had problems like this...
have you fitted an induction kit?? on the SPi a drilled airbox works best, or just remove the baffle on the lower-right of the airbox.
also just check the HT leads & if you have one, dizzy & rotor arm. its not the best fitting component, but the rotor arm can get all carbon'd up & burnt, so give it a scrape a scrape & a clean if you have one

on the inlet fanimold, left hand side (cyl 1) it has a wee funky flat-spade connector thing on it.

also check plugs leads etc like paul said
mine hesitated a bit when i had induction kit on
i took it off fitted new plugs and lead it was ace ran fine
but just in case it could be the coolent sensor
or at worst the coil pack? or sensor chip next to the coil pack
