its best just take it an engineers and get them skim and preasure test it but if you got a straight edge steel ruler or sumthing just place it over the head it all areas, (width, length between chambers) and see if feeler blades will slide under. easier take it engineers.

If its seriously overheated, or you suspect it might be warped your probably best getting it skimmed as a matter of course.
Otherwise a decent steel ruler and a torch in a dark room shows anything up.

But thats £25 you might not need to spend, plus the time do take the head apart and put it back together, you might need to buy valve spring compressors etc. Its not the easiest thing to do if you've never done anything like it before, and its not something you want to get wrong, paying someone to do it wont be cheap either.
Plus obviously if the head is off your car you might not be able to take it somewhere to be skimmed.
