lol, time effort and arm ache! need to rub it down with wet and dry, start with 400 grit work your way to 1500, then get the metal polish out i use peek! then u end up with something like this.............

Sand it down with water and 300 grade wet and dry, move on to 600 grade, then onto 1200 grade, then get the course grade rubbing compound onto it, then go to medium compound and finally buff the fuck outa it with some metal polish or fine rubbing compound. You might want to laquer it too to protect it from oxidation and so you can wax it up.
You will find it easier if you have some form or circular disk sander - you can buy electric ones from B&Q for not much money, though an air powered one would be best cos you got to use water, wand you can change the disk on it to a mop when you get the polisihng compound out...
