Trying to change my cam belt this morning, needs to be done before this evening.

Anyway I just cant get the alternator belt off, its a 8v 1.4 B, ive undone the torx bolts 3 of them around the top of the alternator but it wont move to slacken off the belt, the haynes mentions a spring tensioner yet i cant make any sense of that or see one. Theres a bolt under the alternator which it may pivot on? about 16mm dia. but its tight solid so help me please.

Also when undoing the water pump allen bolts, i can see 2 but i cant get to the otehr

Bolt on the "slide" at the top of the inlet manifold... slacken that off, its a 15mm both sides i think, the alternator wll then pivot towards the front of the car, the spring tensioner is only on 16v cars or those with PAS/ Air con

The haynes lies, i was reading the bit about NO air con/PAS

The bolt on the top "slide" is out as you can see, that was a torx bolt just from one side.

Try to "persuade" the top of the alternator towards the front of the car... a good hammer works well for this purpose

get an iron bar... your jack handle will do... put it against the altenator and use the bulkhead of the car to lever it altenator towards the engine...

dont take no shit form it

off topic.. Adam d......i can now see why you were able to use the v-belt with your conversion... its a different altenator on the 1.2 8v

yeah i relised that was a silly question, must be the late nights, although 5th gear? i would have thought 1st was better? but yeah ill lock the transmition up, i have the road wheel off so will have to put a bar through the studs.

It would be easier if i had someone at mine to stand on the brakes

belts off now anyway, didnt have to slacken the water pump as the haynes said it just took alot of getting off

gotta find the new belt now

dunno know if your replacing them but most snaped cambelts are caused by water pump or tensioner failure and not the actuall belt

and when you tension a new belt up, you'll strain and kill the bearings in the water pump anyway... had this on a rover vvc lump... twice, the muppets
