I need to replace the bulbs in the Instrument panel, (corsa 1995 1.2 8v)
I fully understand the procedure in the haynes manual but one part (bear in mind it has a mechanical speedo):

Instrument Panel Removal:
"Unscrew the speedometer cable lower end from the transmission unit. If necessary, remove the battery, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands to improve access to the cable."

Can't I disconnect the cable from the panel itself? rather than disconnecting it from the g/b end?

What will happen if i disconnect it from the panel?

If I _must_ disconnect it from the g/b is it fairly easy to do so?

So do I listen to Haynes? or do I just live on the edge and disconnect from the panel?

Help appriciated,
thanks in advance

if you undo it on the gearbox end there will be more slack and its easier to undo that end.

however I changed my bulbs without disconnecting the speedo cable, it was a pain

you will have to disconnect the cable from the panel end, it will be so much of a pain to feed the cable back thru the bulkhead.

it makes it easier if you take it off gearbox end too though.

undo all the screws on the dials inside the car put the dials towards you get yer hand in behind them and you will feel the speedo cable....

at the bottom of the cable on the dials theres a metal clip... press it in while pulling the clocks towards you... the cable will pop off...

the only reason they are telling you to take it off the gearbox end is so theres more slack on the cable for refitting but you dont need to do this...
