My cat off the 1l 12v engine has a crack in one of the welded seam joints so it's
blowing through the joint. It's a standard bosal cat (factory fitted). Cat is 3 years/30K miles.
The crack is actually in the original weld on the top seam - not very wide, inch or two long.
Is it possible to get these welded, or will the heat from the welding destroy the
ceramic insides of the cat? If I get it welded will it last any time? Or is it better
to just get a new cat?

I had a crack in my 12v cat and i got it welded but it only lasted 2-3 weeks, so it is better in the long run to get a new one and save the cost of having it welded.

Mig doesnt really last on cats, gas welding would probably hold much better. It should be able to take the welding heat, afterall cats run at 800 odd degrees anyway.

local welder said he'd do it for 30 quid including
removal/refitting (I've got the manifold joint gasket)
that compares to £160 for new cat at good local
garage - bosal cat parts and fitting
(or total rip-off main Vaux dealer Hartwell quoted
me £425 parts and labour for the same job)

Cheers for the link but I already phoned them -
it's ex vat and you have to add vat to post as well so it works out exactly 100 quid to actually buy it.
I asked them what make they were and all they would say was "it's our own brand". I asked if they were oem Bosal or Timax and he said no. The vaux factory fitted ones are bosal I believe.

glad to hear those cats are good I thought they might be cheap imports flogged over the internet coz he wouldn't tell me who they buy them from (the web site is just a reseller they don't make them)
yeah I agree theres no point welding it unless it's going to keep going another couple of years better to put a new one on
Seeing as local mob will put a bosal on for 160, well that's only 60 quid more than buying the cheap cat and the bosal probably is a better one than the internet one - bosal usually better than timax and the other aftermarket ones and bosal are the vaux oem for this car (and I'd have to fit the internet one)
I was hoping a couple of people would post saying something like "yeah I had it welded and it lasted 3-4 years" in which case welding would be worth a chance but from people's answers so far think I'll put the welding money towards a new one
I sure won't be getting the main dealer to do it tho ;-)
