If I have 8mb Broadband what sort of speeds should I be expecting when I do these online speed tests? This is what Im getting...

Downstream 1878 Kbps (234.8 KB/sec) 2028 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 244 Kbps (30.5 KB/sec) 263 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Is that OK for 8mb?

With 8Mb, you'd expect your downstream to be about 7500 Kbps, and your upstream to be anything from 512 Kbps to 1024 Kbps (depending on which ISP you're with)...

here is a guide.. pretty accurate 2

56k - 5.6kb/s
128k - 12.8kb/s
256k - 25.6kb/s
500k - 50kb/s
1mb - 100kb/s
1.5mb - 150kb/s
2mb - 200kb/s
2.2mb - 220kb/s

so from that 8mb should be 800kb/s not 7500kb/s

Dont' forget that these services are contended firstly so in theory you could have 8Mbps on a 50:1 contention you guaranteed bandwidth is 160Kbps in theory.....

Anohter consideration is these sites that do download tests use file downloading methods to guage the speed test, with the nature of TCP/IP you may only see this speed as an average as your line hasn't reached its potential.

Lastly your ISP does not subscribe the same amount of bandwidth as is required as not all users are on 100% of the time using all the bandwidth.

If none of this makes sense give me a shout as i've been up all night.

Hope it helps.

DanB was talking about kilobits per second.
You are talking about kilobytes per second.

You are talking about kilobytes per second.

Correct, and the calculations are nowhere near accurate anyway!

Kbps = Kilobits per second
KB/sec = Kilobytes per second

1 byte = 8 bits

Theoretical proper full speeds:

56 Kbps = 7 KB/sec
128 Kbps = 16 KB/sec
256 Kbps = 32 KB/sec
512 Kbps = 64 KB/sec
1 Mbps = 128 KB/sec

Do I need to go on? Oh, and to correct the statement, the maximum theoretical download-speed (ignoring contention and other mitigating factors) on a 8 Mbps line would be 1 MB/sec. The 7500 Kbps I referred to would equate to a download speed of 937.5 KB/sec...

Please read up on things before you (wrongly) correct someone!
