Hi gang, wonder if anyone could help, My GSi (C16XE) just seems very reluctant to warm up under normal driving, the temp gauge works as if I leave it sat on idle it will warm up fine after a few minutes, but with normal driving (mixture of duel carriageway and residential areas) the needle barely moves about the first couple of bars on the temp gauge, obvioulsy the heaters are barely getting mildly warm and I'm concerned that this lack of heat might be having an effect on the thickness of th eoil which could potentially lead to much more serious problems than having cold toes whilst driving!
I'm thinking maybe there is a airlock in the cooling system somewhere (there is plenty of water in there) and wondered if there was a technique to bleed the air out?
Any ideas?

Maybe your thermostat is open all the time?
They are quite cheap to replace, £10?

Had the same thing on my RedTop. had to leave it sat running for 30mins before it got above 90 deg! When the thermostats go on Vaux's they tend to lock open (Prevent overheating). New Stat is about £15 from the dealers. Does your Radiator get warmish straight from start? With your engine running at correct temp you'll also find you get better fuel consumption...

Done the stat and it's still shite - better than what it is but still crap - any ideas?

is it sealing round the thermosta housing fully? it's the only thing on the engine which controls it's temp. That or the fans on all the time, but you'd notice that.
Also cause it's winter, ppl have the heater on in the car, so it takes longer for the car to warm up (as it takes heat from the water system)

Yeah it's sealing fine with no problems, it was a new stat housing aswell as a new stat and seal.
The only thing I can think of is air in the system or the matrix is knackered/blocked.
I've tried doing as someone suggested and left the car running for 10 mins with the fan on full and the header cap off (to bleed the air out) but this has made no difference.

i hope your on bout scrappy prices there  i went to get a new one and was £70+ off the top of my head

From Vauxhall it's about £70 cos it comes with a new housing, to replace the actual thermostat itself (from a Motor Factors or something) is anywhere between £10 and £20.
Getting back to my problem it looks like the heater matrix might be blocked, one pipe (the drivers side) is getting very hot, where as the otherside (passenger side) is luke warm so obviously there is a blockage in there somewhere by the looks of it.

but then the gauge would still show high because the sensor is near the stat.
take the hose off rad bottom and see what the coolant is like that comes out.
could be gungey.

The coolant was all drained when I changed the thermostat, and it's currently fine 'gunge' wise.
I think I'm gonna have to change the heater matrix under the dash as it seems like it's blocked.
