Since the weather has got colder it's had trouble starting when cold. The other night it had not been driven for two days and it took ages to start - had to give it lots of throttle, when it eventually did it would not idle, after about a minute of throttling it settled down to an idle.

After a 20min drive and 3 hours standing, it started perfectly fine.

Anyone know whats wrong? Could it be temp sensor/cold start/warm up reg (I don't know much ahbout these engines)

It drives fine once it's started.

Thanks for any help,

Andy

in which case it could be valve clearance, i know its a known fault on my engine had to adjust the shims. as in cold weather its hard to start if u dont.
i dont know whever it is the case on the 1.4 petrol though.

Cheers. Think battery is ok as it turns the engine over no problem, even after several attempts.

No induction kit, engine is totally standard.

Miles - Whats CTS?

I've seen the thread about reading ECU fault codes so I might have a go at that.

Do Corsa's suffer from dodgy coolant temperature senders? Whereabouts will I find it?

Might just check the easy things first like Dizzy cap/Rotor/Leads etc.

Cheers I will check those things.

Air filter is brand new, plugs looked fine, I got a new fuel filter but haven't fitted it yet.

Where/what is this autochoke thing, I thought Injection cars had a 5th injector or extra fuelling controlled electronically?

thanks

Whn you say air filter, do you just mean the panel filter inside the airbox, or have you fitted an induction kit of some sort? Both SPI and MPI Corsas have auto-chokes, and it would make sense if the autochoke is fucked and showing these symptoms.
My guess would be maybe a discharged battery, and you said that you checked the sparks, did you make sure they were tightened to the correct amount? Leaving the wrong gap could cause problems. Maybe low cylinder compression or fuel injection fault. Its difficult to say!

are you sure its an auto choke? i thought it was only possible to have chokes on a carb'd car

with fuel injection it is a fuel enrichment thing where it works by running of a coolant temp sensor (not the one for dash!)

I started my car up last night, and for the first few minutes it holds revs at about 1200-1500rpm. It pumps out massive amounts of vapour, and then after its warmed a bit, it goes back to normal, with a tiny bit of vapour and around 900rpm on the rev counter.

I thought the Coolant Temperature Sensor just informs the ECU of the engine temperature??

yes what your describing is cold start enrichment!

at first it sprays extra fuel into the cylinders to give it a helping in hand in starting, then it holds the higher revs until it thinks its warm enough

go & have a read in your haynes for us and see if it says anything about cold-start enrichment.

coolant temp sensor is maybe a bit confusing, might be easier if i called it a thermo-time switch

Just looked in haynes manual, it says nothing about cold start enrichment.
