Bit of everything really. Some photography/photoshop, some games, quite rare, internet and office apps.

High constrast and brightness specs, low response, dvi, any other connections are a bonus, when you see one you like have a quick look on google for reviews.

most 17" panels nowadays will have a response time of around 12ms. It's pretty standard now.
Hyundai make good monitors. If you do some research you'll find that most of the panels are made by Hyundai anyway.

Ive got a Samsung SyncMaster 913N 19" TFT. Highly recommend it and its not a bad price either

Just had a look on ebuyer and you can get it for 160 notes. My xmas bonus should cover that so I think I might get it
