what do i need to re install? and will it remove EVERYTHING?

i still have this virus thing, and i want to delete it as my laptop is being collected for inspection by the insurance company, and they told me to remove any viruses and back up all the info first

what do i do?

Rob, formatting through a DOS prompt will reset the Master Boot Record and File Table, essentially removing ALL data from the Hard Disk, however, the data is still on the disk as a physical state but is just overwritten when the disk is formatted ready for reinstall of the new operating system.
a particularly bad virus can hang around even after a format by manifesting itself in the BIOS EEPROM. a low level format normally cures this as the data is phyiscally overwritten with blank clusters.
First of all, just throw in your Windows XP install CD, reboot, and from the options menu after restart, select the options to format the disk and install XP as a fresh install.

Rob, download this:

http://www.killdisk.com/

run it from a CD at startup.

1-pass will be sufficient,

then install Windows, be sure to have your CD key and also any driver that might be needed after re-install
