just checked in my manual and it says:
note - the valve lifters should always be stored upright in a container of clean engine oil while removed from the cylinder head.
inspect the valve lifters for obvious signs of wear on the contact faces, and check the valve lifter oil holes for obstructions, particually for oil sludge.if excessive wear is evident (this is unlikely), all the valve lifters must be renewed as a set.
it doesnt seam to tell you how to rebuild them on the DOHC engines but does show you how to on the SOHC engines

when you take them out there is a chance that they will not re-fill themself again when replaced. new set is 120 from auto-vaux.

i bought my engnie a new set from:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Tappet-Assy-Cavalier-Calibra-Astra-Vectra_W0QQitemZ4599258736QQihZ002QQcategoryZ10404QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
When I removed the head a month or so ago due to stripped head bolts I placed them in a container full of oil as per the haynes manual.

Ive never kept them in oil but when you put new ones in they sound like a diesil engine for ten minutes or so. So I guess kepping in them in prevent that.
Ive soaked them in petrol to clean the up

they are well easy to take out and clean
first grab the bucket with a cloth and get a soft piece of wood, now hit the bucket agaist the wood and the lifter should fall out, eventually. no get a pointed tool like a small screw driver and press down on the small ball in the middle of the lifter untill all the old oil is out, now place it in a container of new oil and repeat, to fill it back up. u will be able to feel when it fills up and it should go smooth the more u pump it. now replace it into the bucket, it should fit back in with a click. now repeat for the next 15
worked very well when i did mine, went very quiet. some of the may take a bit to smack out but as long as u do it on a soft piece of wood u should be ok

if you want a more detailed descrition send me your email and i now have found the document and ill email it to you. it has pics to
