Has to be from the same graphics card AFAIK. Basically you need a good graphics card with 2 monitor outputs. I think anyway.

I'm not sure if you can do it using a VGA connector and then that other bigger connection that you get with alot of Nvidia cards? Mines got one and my monitor has a socket for it but never tried it.

I use 2 monitors at work and its really cool, i hate using my Laptop at home and only having a small screen.

If you want to try it just go to your display properties and you should have an option to extend your desktop, just click that and away you go

you cannot connect a monitor to your onboard VGA if you have a Graphics card pluged in. it disables the onboard.
you ether need a dual head card or 2 cards ( 2 PCI-E or AGP and PCI )

It doesn't disable the onboard in 100% of cases. Would depend on motherboard.

I'd give it a go.

i used to have an AGP and a PCI running a monitor each

Now i've got a Radeon 9600 with dual output so they both run off that.
Got 2 19" Widescreens atm

Dual screen is cool. I've used it for ages, but every time I have done it I have used a dual head graphics card, first one was an AGP, second one was a PCI-E...

like john said, it might be possible - check under your bios settings and switch on the onboard graphics and see what happens. You might have to set the AGP/PCI/PIC-E card to be the first one to load (should be an option under the bios).

If it doesn't detect two monitors under windows, then easiest option is to get a dual head graphics card - can pick them up for a few quid these days

While we're on the subject.
Im thinking about extending my monitors at work, but i only have one output.
Ive seen VGA splitters on ebay for a few quid.

Does anyone know if these give you an extended desktop and not a replica of the other screen?

most graphics cards had duel outputs now as standard. norm a vga and dvi very easy to setup too

A must have piece of software to use with a duel/tri/quad monitor setup is ultramon
