Happens usually when playing CS (counterstrike) but has happened a few times while just mooching on the internet. Is it likely to be hardware at fault or software i.e malware or virus etc?
Can provide specs of pc when at home (at work at the moment).
Gameplay just stops, no beeps or blue screen etc.
Cheers

So the whole system locks or just the game?
It could be heat, in which case i would take the side of your case off and see if that helps (might be worth cleaning the dust out of it too) - if it is, chances are its the graphics card, so might need to look at getting a 3rd party aftermarket cooler.
Otherwise, it could be ram - google memtest and run it overnight and see what happens.
But yea, it's more likely to be a either a hardware fault or heat issue, though obviously its worth doing a virus/spyware test etc (use spybot for spyware stuff)

thanks for the reply's
yes the whole system freezes up, have to manually restart via the reset button.
no events logged at the times of the lockup, however i will get the casing off later and go from there.

MY suspect list would be:
1. Heat
2. PSU
3. RAM

thing is though, if it was dodgy ram it would usually do a BSOD and give an error that it can't write address X etc
Still dont write it out that it could be though and PSU is a good point, a low +5 or +12v would easily cause a lock up - get hold of speedfan or motherboard monitor and keep an eye on votlages

thing is though i repaired a PC last week that was so full of dust it actually caused random reboots etc, so i stripped it out and cleaned it and all was well again

Certainly try taking it apart and cleaning the crap out of it. I was really supprised as to how much dust and fluff there was blocking my fans and heat sinks which has probably atributed to a lot of my recent computer problems...
