No no. Demos are free -- £6.99 was the full game download.
Maybe tell him to update to latest firmware (1.6) -- I did that first but GTA:SA works for me.

£6.99 for a full game thats pretty good

Same as what Tim said. Download the latest firmware update, as that increases the number of PS2 games that it will play with no problems by a huge number
