What is recommended or are they any differences between the Pipercross style foam filter, and the K&N style gauze filter ?
I am talking about panel filters here, not induction kits.
I have a drilled airbox, and want a bit more sound and airflow. Whats recommended ?

pipercross is noiser, and also doesnt filter as well as the K&N
6 of one, half a dozen of the other really

That's not the case. I have seen dirt retention (filtration) test results for both and they're as good as each other, both over 99%!!!!
The filters to avoid for filtration are the stainless steel ie Simota type filters as these would let small animals into your engine!
You'll find the PVD panel filter at £24.95 is as good as either of the above 2, and also much cheaper
