just to totally rule it out... check the pedal and make sure the cable is still there... the later design... i think it was from 97 on is completlly useless and not up to the job... i had to bodge a washer onto me girlfriedns tigra just to get the clutch pedal to do its job...

however it sounds to be as though something in the gearbox is fooked... bring it back to the guys you fitted the clutch for you... they havent done something right.. is the reliese baring new?

Glad its not just me that had to do this. I have a '97 1.5TD and I was horrified at the cheap plastic bits on the top of the clutch pedal.

I had the crunchy gears, hard to get in reverse, generally made the car hard to drive. I wasn't convinced that adjusting the cable was the right thing to do - a worn clutch will get easier to disengage, not harder. Turns out that the nipple on the end of the clutch cable that goes in the pedal had worn away the plastic on the pedal guide and the first 5 or 10 mm or travel on the pedal just twisted the end of the cable sideways and distorted the plastic on the top of the pedal. No amount of adjusting was going to get that travel back into the cable, the pedal design was just crap.

I fabricated a 15mm wide steel channel with a 3mm slot in it to sit under the end of the cable aroud the plastic bits of the pedal and the gears are all sorted. Basically the "washer with wings" is to strengthen the slot that the cable sits in to stop it pulling through. The sides of the channel wrap around the pedal plastic to stop it rotating off.

No more grinding the gears, and the car is nice to drive again.

If you've got grinding gears, difficult to get into reverse, etc, you might wanna have a look at the end of the clutch cable where it joins onto the pedal to see if that is the problem before just adjusting the cable.
