I have 1 more year left at uni and a laptop that is pushing 4 years old and cant handle things like it could, so ive been toying with the idea of building a computer as cheap as possible, but i dont know anything.

So, how cheaply could i build a computer? I have a screen and an external harddrive which i presume i could just use them?

the only things i care about the computer being able to handle is Skype, watching videos, internet

A 4 year old laptop should be able to handle this.

I'd say just do a full format and install of Windows XP again. It'll seem 100% faster after that.

well its kinda odd. a couple months ago i took it to some guy cos it was loud and very slow. apparently it was the cpu. he changed that and installed windows vista and gave it back and it was faster and ok.

but the problem is videos and skype. my girlfriend is in america so i skype alot and it cant handle it which is a real issue, i have to stop everything else and even then it may be shit

how would i format and wouldnt this have been done when i got the new cpu/vista

Vista on a 4 year old laptop is a no no for starters.

What did he change the cpu from and to and how much did he charge?

you may be better off taking it to one of your more 'geekified' friends, if you arent sure how to format and reinstall an operating system it could take a long and drawn out process over a forum, much better to get someone to show u, you must know someone who could do it?
