The screen is fucked, so I can't even copy them to CDs, can I connect the old HDD to my new laptop somehow to get them?

some laptop hardrives will connect straight into a PC IDE cable and windows will pick it up, otherwise youl need a laptop hdd usb adaptor off ebay

Get an enclosure for it from ebay, £10 odd, then hook it up to the new laptop, and transfer everything on to it.

or if you have an external usb memory source, ie usb hardrive, or usb memory stick, download knoppix, with the laptop hdd in your new laptop, you should be able to boot into knoppix off a cd, read the data and copy it onto the memory stick

That then depends If it tries to boot from the HDD first, rather than the CD, if not hes going to have to go into the BIOS, which he couldnt really do with a fucked screen?

I use these at work for recovering laptop data.
Ebay Link
Remove laptop HDD (2.5")
Find spare IDE cable and plug into PC
Boot up as normal and take off all your HDD.
Or you could plug a monitor into back of your laptop and use it that way, copy it to an external HDD.

Can I not just get a cable which plugs from this
to USB so I can run it as an external hard drive for about half an hour before binning it?
