Im considering following a guide to retro fit cruise control in the fabia, my only reservation is when it talks you through removing the airbag, how risky is it removing the airbag? is it likely to explode when touched?

Disconnect and leave for as long as you can Steve.

That'll make sure any residual charge will go from the system.

Just wear a crash helmet. It'll make the guide more amusing anyway.

The crash helmet comment made me laugh out loud.

Everyone at work KNOWS that nothing I look at on the computer is funny. They also know i'm banned from the internet. So thanks

Anyway... Just disconnect the battery and whip the airbag unit out - Easy peasy!

Don't do it Steve you seem the clumsy type, your missus will shout you to come in for your spaghetti hoops and you'll stick the screwdriver in too far or something.

Just hit the front of the Fabia with a Metal trash can like in Die Hard 4.0 and the airbags will deploy anyway
