some screens have a "white wash" feature which u leave running which can SOMETIMES eliminate it, unfortunately in most cases once u got it then u cant get rid completely.
and its not guna be covered under warranty. hence why channels like MTV and that move their logos around the screen to stop them being burnt on

if you can get a pc plugged up to it then google around, as theres software that MIGHT help ease it a little. But if it's pretty bad then you're pretty much screwed - just remember not to leave the plasma on whilst not watching it

it's not from playing on it. It's from leaving it dormant with an image on the screen. Leave on a screensaver or switch it off when not in use.

LCD's don't suffer from screen burn. They work in a different way to Plasmas and CRT's so you don't need to worry about it. Though you shouldn't leave them on for ages and ages because they have back lights in them which are pretty inefficient and get quite hot and can wear out after a while.

LCDs don't get screen burn but they suffer from image retention, and if bad enough can cause a similar effect to screen-burn on plasmas. However, it can be cured by either leaving the LCD screen off for an extensive amount of time or by exciting the pixels (playing random video or using something like JScreenFix, which will get rid of it gradually).

if you leave the same image on a screen for a long time it will burn into it.
then you will see a feint image ontop of what you are watching

like richie and i said, LCDs suffer from image retention/persistance - i've seen it happen a few times with LCD screens being used for information boards/advertising in offices etc, and for the effect to last days/weeks afterwards. But it's easily cured.
Jay - it isn't a good idea to leave any type of flat panel on for extensive periods, if you have a set-top box then i would look at feeding the sound to an external source so the screen can be turned off etc.
