I'm pretty confident at DIY, but never tried tiling before.
Is it hard to do? Anyone tackled a bathroom first time and got good results?

aslong as your walls are flat, and you apply an even level of adhesive its piss easy

Your best bet is to find the centre of the wall and tile outwards from there, so you are getting equal cuts on either end of the wall. Also use the tile edging strips around the edges to make it look neat.
Something we used to do at work was if we where doing a large ares, break it up by putting a nice thin border through it. Just have a look and decide where looks the most pleasing to the eye

Well it's already tiled at the mo, but the tiles look like there from the 50's. I need to take them off and then go over with new tiles.
Is that still pretty easy?

if the tiles are sound, you can just tile straight over them

i always take the old tiles off tbh. dont like going over the top of existing stuff.
what i normally do is find the middle and then mark the wall with the positions of the tiles.
also i check the flatness of the wall with a plumb line to find the high point. i then strat from there with the first tile with as small an amount of adhesive as possible. this is so that you can build up any low spots with more adhesive to ensure the finished wall will be flat. if you start from a low point you will end up with a tiled wall that is all over the place.

see if you can pick one of them tile cutters up from b&q. the circular saw kind. they are messy as fuck but good.

i got one from b&q... was only about 20-25 but saved me ages and made a neater job!
tiling is really easy!

tiling is easy if you set you'r levels out right and center lines to minimise odd cuts. and get a good 1200mm level and tile saw
