Having a slight mare:

We have a machine that is to be bolted to a bridge, its connecting to the internet using a dial up connection. What keeps happening is its just loosing the connection every now and again, so we need it every 5 mins etc to check the connection, and if lost reconnect.

How can this be done ?

well depends on the OS it runs doesnt it? then you can work out what you can run on the system to check the connection.
