possible geek zone? is there a particular program which can be used to shorten an MP3 and then save it so it can be used as a phone ringtone.

Does your phone not support full MP3 tones then? Mine will simply play for as long as the person is ringing/the network will allow them to ring.
There is software out there, but I don't know of any decent free ones etc.

yea it does support full mp3. but say the part you want to use as a ringtone is like 90 seconds into the song? can u shorten the mp3 and resave it?

Yeah, with the right software.
Windows MovieMaker will do it, but saves it as .WMA

I used to use windows sound recorder to edit my wav files, now i've got vista it demands a microphone tho 
and then encode .wav into .mp3

Try Audacity. Play the file and record it (records whatever you would hear, no need for a microphone) and then you can cut and crop files as you like. Also good for recording songs off youtube music vids etc

i have a program called mp3 splitter (genius name, huh?)
it's a free one available from download.com and will split the file by time, by file size, or something else that i don't remember
quite a handy tool

in iTunes? You just import the song, fiddle around with the start and end times and then convert it to mp3... wallah
