What is the situation with displaying ‘copyright 2008 by Bart’ at the bottom of the website?
Is this something I must pay for, send off for, or becauses ive made the website, I can simply add it?
I’ve come across a number of websites which display this, but I suspect they are not ‘registered’ etc. Is there a database I can check against?

Don't need to apply for it. Copyright is automatic to you once you have created somethin in most cases.

You get it by default, but you need to be able to prove that you are the designer or creator of said material. You have to have a big bank balance to defend it though...

These men speaketh the truth . I'm doing intellectual property at the mo, had a lecture on this today in fact. As long as you're making the website outside your course of employment, then you most likely do have copyright.
And what ed said about having a big bank balance.. no win no fee?

You have it anyway, the message is just for information.
In fact I would leave it off, demonstrates a lack of familiarity with the legislation.

I was once told if you send something to yourself in the post, never open it, the date stamp from the Post Office is pretty good in terms of copywriting etc.
Not sure how true this is - I guess you could print the source code for your website and send it to yourself.

That is indeed true. You do a drawing or picture. You post it to yourself and leave the envelope sealed. If you ever have a dispute, you produce the envelope with said drawing in it and they can use the post mark on it to prove the date of production.

Could technically do that with the websites code, every time you update it etc
