Having just moved into our first house in august, were now needing the heating on more and more.
As i have no idea what heating a house costs etc, ive been looking about online for info.
First thing im confused about is whats best to do.
Some places say leave it on 24/7 with the thermostat set to desired temp and trvs set to 1-2, while in, and lower it when u go out/bed to just keep it up if it drops.
Others say set it up on a timer to come on hr before u get up, and hr before u get home etc.
Opinions?

BTW...
House is 3 years old. very well insulated. A rated with nout to improve on. In the summer u cannot breathe without all windows and door open. But its fucking freezing at the min lol.
Its a 1 bedrom apartment, but only thing connected is garages below.
It has a combi boiler

Mines comes on 6:30-8 0am & 4:30-110pm daily.
trv's are on 4-5 & got a room stat on the hall set to 20oC.

I set my thermostat thing on 18C when the missus gets cold. We live in a well old house that cant be insulated easily or cheaply. Put a jumper on and an extra pair of socks  Also patch up any draughts if u can find them and draught excluders for under doors and what not. 1 bedroom flat should be cheap as chips to heat

Ours comes on 6.30-7:45 then 40 till 8:30
Bloody freezing though and we've turned up the temperature.
Ours is a 3/4 bedroom mid terraced never warm though

well we currently have it set to come on same time as were due home (7pm) and go off at 10pm.
and on at 6.30am off at 8.30am.
Prehaps i should try start it at 6pm-9pm so that its warm when we get home

mine is on 5.45-615 then i put it on for an hour when i get in about 4pm, then on again about 7-9pm

its swings and roundabouts to be honest mate.
do you have trv's on all the rads? i generally dont go above 25*C on the thermostat and set each room at the house to what i need, ive got a young baby in the house so we have ours on at midnight for a few hours so that the wee one doesnt get too cold,
try a steady temperature eg 25*c for a longer period such as 3 hours rather than 30*c for a shorter period like 2 hours as you will use more gas at 30*C...
think of it as a marathon at 25*c you can go much longer, 30*c you wil use a lot more energy up and its basically a sprint
works best when i tell the customers that anyway

Yesterday. I set the temp to 20 on the thermostat. All the radiators to 3 on the trvs.
I went out at 6, got home at 10, and it was still on.
It was still cold. id have expected such a little place well insulated etc would have been boiling by then?
I doubt it can help having kardean flooring direct to the concrete flooring?
Its really beginning to make it uncomfy to live in. but im worried if i turn it on 24/7 its gonna be expensive

Like I said our place isnt insulated tbh, its got ltitle roof installation and the walls are so thin they cant be insulated. It heats up fast even when its close to 0 outside, like it has been, but it does tend to lose the heat quite quick due to the insulation.
You got double glazing? Are all the windows shut? Can you block up any useless vents? (dont go blocking up gas vents etc). Check where pipes come into the walls of your place on the outside, the holes may not be snug and the icy winds will blow into and through your rooms.
From what you said above is it a coach house style place? Where you have a row of garages with the people who own them live over the top?

We leave out thermostat on at 17 degrees 24/7. Heating only comes on if it drops below that!
Int he evening we have it up at 19 degress
Heating bills are not high!

Even when theres noone there? I dont turn it on when we are in bed, this morning it was 12.5C in the dining room

Its a row of 6 garages under us. there is another identical property above 3 of them, were above the other 3.
There is only 2 propertys, but 6 garages.
Ive got it set at 17 and on permenant as of tonight. So will see how it goes. I have a meter reading from yesterday, so will check next week as to how much it has used. if its around 10 a week, ill be more than happy.
What i dont understand is how they charge for gas and electric.
On my last electric bill, it says primary and secondary units. when i look at my price plan, primary is up to 900kwhs. secondary units thereafter.
But i used like 56 primary and 130 secondary for example? how does that work lol

Because theres no heat coming from downstairs you'll need to put your heating on higher. Ive noticed a substantial difference when the flat below me is empty (its rented out) i have to put my heating up.
No one understands how gas/elec bills work...there not meant to be understood!!
Best thing to do is stick your heating up high & work back down to what you think is appropriate!?

17oC is too low, stick it on 20, thats what mines on & its just about right!

mines set to come on 7-9am then 5-11pm or similar.
stat is set to 16. seems fine most of the time. my rooms a bit cold, but i can't find my rad bleed key.
It probably feels colder than it is because the floor is cold. can you not pull it up and put some foam underneath the wood?

I have just checked my usuage for the last 2 days.
It was exactly 48hrs, and i have used 10 cubic meters of gas. which if im right is around 111kwh.
which at 6p per kwh is £6 for 2 days electric. so £3 a day. Thats £21 a week or 84 a month, is that excessive for winter?

I dunno, I worked out for mine from gas bills, im using something like 15kwh on gas a day? Not sure if mine is underconsumption....
