Don't even have to spend that much.
Can get decent dx10 card for £50-£60, I got the 4760 was amazed, top quality will run crysis on full.
Not many old style connections around, mostly now pci-e 2.0 x16
ATI HD 4670 decent card for cheap.
ATI HD 4850
Nvidia 250gts
I'm not too clued up either, better to get newer cards as they can equal old ones but use less power.
ATI seem to offer more value for money when it comes to under £100.
8800gts is always a good card but power hungry.
Need a decent cpu to keep up to speed or it will cause a bottle neck and destroy fps.

9600GT isn't far different to the 8600GT.
I have an 8800GT 512MB, it's a great card. Cost about your budget when I bought it too, should be less now.
The 8800GTS is a lame card, the GT 512MB isn't far off the performance of the 8800GTX on some games, and sometimes exceeds it.
Numberwang!

thats not true mate. Theres about 80-90% performance increase with the 9600gt. The 9600gt is not far off the 8800gt.

Crysis
1440x900
AIT HD 4670 512mb
all full settings - but AA off.
amd 7850 2.8ghz
2gb ram
30fps which is not great but it's enough, not that I wish to play crysis because it's crap but just a testing platform for the card that cost me £53, I think its pretty good value for money.
I think the 8800gts is okay.
Was getting up to 65fps on full settings on Crysis on my friends pc.
Intel quad core overclocked to 3.2ghz
320mb 8800gts
xp 64
4gb ram
Could get them for £45 at scan.co.uk next cheapest I found was ebay at £65 xfx model.
Just spend the full £120 on a card and it will be decent enough for what you need.

Thanks guys, went for this
https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-98GT1
He only plays at 1280x1024 so this should last him a good couple of years should think. Thought it was a steal as well tbh, everywhere else they are pushing £100 without delivery
