You need an installation disk with a valid serial key. If you don't know yours (there might be one on a sticker on the back of your case), if not download a cd-key extractor such as any of the software here;

http://www.infopackets.com/news/software/windows_tips/2004/20040930_extract_cd_key_from_the_registry.htm

You should be able to download the Windows ISO from the Microsoft website. Make sure you get the right version (i.e. don't get professional if you've got home version installed).

possibly, if you're using XP get this release:

Microsoft.Windows.XP.Professional.SP3.Integrated.August.2009.Corporate.Unattended-UP2DATE

http://www.rlslog.net/microsoft-windows-xp-professional-sp3-integrated-august-2009-corporate-up2date/

Installed it yesterday on a machine, windows updates work fine. Quick Google will find you torrents.

look at a program called Ghost made by a company called symantec. you make a cd that is bootable (in the same way that an xp disc is) while both drives are plugged in, choose the source (your old hard drive) the destination (the new drive) and set it going. it'll make an exact copy of your old drive but on a new, undamaged drive. Just an idea if you can't be bothered copying stuff and reinstalling programs etc etc

Although, if your drive is dying it might get corrupted.
