0% on purchases for the first 12 months
Does this simply mean that everything I buy is free for the first year so long as I pay it off before the 12 months is up?

only if you pay the minimum payment off every month though.
i made the mistake of thinking i just paid it all off at the end of the 12 months and didn't pay the minimum payment off for the 1st bill i got through.
had to pay a £12 late payment fee and lost the 0% for 12 months deal
young and naive then.

This is the trick. You HAVE TO achieve the minimum payment every month.
But yes, it's essentially free in that they won't charge you for the privilege of using the card.

Do people not see it as common sense that you would have to pay at least the minimum payment every month

It's not really a trick either, the minimum payment isn't much unless you've got a 30k limit.
