3GS is the newest, yes its great, yes it has a huge fan club, and yes it is the best
There will be a new one out in June/July, I would consider waiting until then, even if you only get a 3GS still, you might save some moolan.
Ask John about them, I think he has two iPhones.
p.s Geek Day

You get a worse signal with the 3GS than you do with the 3G.

Either get a Desire or wait until the new iphone comes out.
I'll wait until the specs are officially released before making judgement.
Waste of money getting the 3GS and being stuck with an obsolete phone for the next 18-24 months.
Geek day, many discussions on it.

Agree with John, go for the HTC Desire or wait until the release of the new iPhone. However, i'd expect they will want a few quid for the new iPhone and a 24 month contract.
I've just transfered my 3GS over to my sister as it was new in the box and i very rare used it as i have a 3G for work. Just used my IP phone to text and call my mates as most of them i can't be fucked with anymore.

Really depends on specs. if its similar hardware to the 3GS then it wont be that bad.
We all know its likely to have afront facing camera (which aint that exciting), doesnt make it worth the upgrade to me.
I can see the camera hardware being upgrade though, it needs it now.
