Hi all,
Just bought a 2004 corsa life 3 weeks ago, was stopped at traffic lights last week & the engine cut out - it took a few attempts to restart and EML light was on all the way home (felt like the engine was working very hard). Does anyone know what this could be, and whether it's serious (seems to be ok at the moment). Also, the engine was replaced 10 months ago as it was misfiring (only found this out after i bought it!)
thanks

Could always do a paper clip test on it and see if it throws anything up?

How do you do the paper clip test??
I just did the brake and accelerator thing & it came up as crankshaft sensor incorrect/open circuit. i got it at a vauxhall dealer down the road from me & they supposedly serviced it before i bought it, hmmm

a service wont reveal a fault unless it happens by coincidence on the day of the service, faults can occur any time.
could be a crank sensor. does it fire up ok when its cold?

It's not really been that cold down here since I bought it really. I spoke to the previous owner last night & he said he had it a
Month and traded it in with a crank case sensor problem! Looks like it's still got the same fault?! In the past 2 years it's only done 4000 miles. O dear, looks like they saw me coming!!

I diddnt mean when its literally cold Haha. I mean if you leave it over night would it fire up straight away in the morning when the engine hasn't warmed up yet. A crank sensor is an electro magnet (iron core surrounded by a coil of wire) and when the teeth on the crankshaft pass the sensor, they induce a voltage. This voltage is detected by the computer and by the length of the pulse (size of the tooth that is passing the sensor) it works out the relative position of the crankshaft. If the copper cable inside the sensor breaks, when it gets warm, it can expand and lose contact, but when it cools down again, will work. Take it back to the dealer if its still under warranty

hahaha! sorry - blonde moment! It has misfired a couple of times, but mostly it comes on first time. Got 2 years warranty on it, probably going to try & get a refund or replacement though, cos it looks like no one's been able to fix it so far & the previous owner was advised by a mechanic to get rid of it!
