If possible i would fit to the eves, then you can feed from the upsairs lighting main, or if you want and overide drop a wire the landing light switch for the outside, or fit a remote power switch that way the wiring is a lot more simple.

What would be REALLY handy is if you had a spark that lived near you....

kitchen is an extention so there is no upstairs

It's nothing to do with being solar powered, it uses a couple of crap LED's that aren't close to an incandescent bulb in a normal floodlight.
If it used some of the newer LED technology you are talking about it might be better.
