just swapped my 1.0 12v engine for an x16xe and it red lines at 5000 revs what could this be

its got a 4-1 manifold

straight through centre section

and no air box atm

theres a bit of a flat spot too inbetween 1000-2000 revs pulls really well though untill 5000 revs lol

The rev limit is actually 5000 revs (as in it bounces) or it just wont pull past 5k?

Why did you want to know what colours are on the top of the ecu?

Just going to swap the bulb on the EMLand see what codes I get

The early ECU is red and blue and the late ECU is red and cream, the wiring looms are slightly different too. ( knock sensor) I had this problem, fitted a early ECU to a 1997 R and it wouldn`t rev over 5000, like boucing off a limiter. Bought a later ECU and the car run like a dream

Had this problem about a year ago.

Bought a 16 sport that i later built into an XE.

Engine loom was messy so i swapped the tidyer one off my GSI in, realised the plugs were different so swapped ech etc in (GSI was an x16 so thought it'd be fine)
It done the same limiting at 5k thing swapped it back and it was fine.

Knock sensor.

Either a faulty knock sensor

or

Knock sensor wiring needs changing to the older/earlier version to suit your ecu.

If its knock sensor it will be code #16 iirc

They have a tendancy to just die, or what i did when doing my coversion i used a late type version of wiring on a early ecu, it wouldn't go past 5k revs, as soon as i changed the wire for the specific knock sensor it was fine as the ecu reads it properly.

I didnt know there where 2 types of knock sensor until last week.

Tried the paper clip test again eml didn't show on two clicks of the ignition so I started the car it sounded different was not idle'ing as lumpy as it was so took the paper clip out whilst it was still started and it changed idle

Banged paper clip back in give the rev a blast and it reached 6800/7000 k revs what I want to know is would having the paper clip in slot 5&6 damage anything on my car

Tbh I don't know how having a paper clip in there can sort that but it did so I'm happy
