Ok,seem to have lost all my desktop files,start option files,pictures etc and can't find them.
Tried a few of those data recovery downloads,they find the files,but want money to recover them.Not being a tight arse but tbh i don't trust them to work.
So does any1 know of any free 1s that work,or where i can get a free licence key online etc.

Look in your c:\Users or c:\Documents And Settings directory (depending on your version of Windows) as profile data is stored in there.
Sounds like you might have corrupted your user profile.

Sounds like you've got malware, thats what the latest one does, pita to sort, need to get your data, unhide the stuff you want then format.
If you show hidden files and everything comes back that's what it will be.

Sam, can't find anything anywhere.All the folders are empty,but the recovery download found them,so they are somewhere.
John, now you say that,i think you could be right.Got malware about 3 weeks ago,and it done the same thing with the desktop items (don't know about the other files,never checked).
Downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-malware and it brought them all back.This time though,it won't install it.
On leading up to all this,i was getting random pop-ups that were connecting to the net and opening another tab using the likes of Ebay and PC Tools etc,trying to sell me stuff.
Or i could here adverts randomly playing in the background,but theyr was nothing to cross off,no tabs opened etc.
Currently on XP,you think i could just re-install it,or will i lose all my hidden files too??

Download CCleaner and SuperAntiSpyware, and save them to a USB stick/drive.
Boot your system into Safe Mode, run CCleaner to remove dead registry settings, clear temporary Windows/Internet files as sometimes malware runs from temporary folders/recycle bin etc.
Next, run a full scan in SAS to get rid of any malware and shite. When that's done, do a full scan with Malwarebytes, and then reboot into Windows normally and see what happens.
