What engine?

head gasket isn't as daunting as it sounds.

Get a new gasket kit and put a new one on. If you do it and it works then you still have your car. If you mess it up then it doesnt matter as it doesnt work anyway.

Not if you dont have the money and cant get insured on other cars.

Wont cost anymore than £100 for a haynes manual and the bits for it.

yeah if your doing it on the rough.

if not it's £90 for the timing chain locking kit alone, then your looking about £70 or more depending on where you can get all the gaskets and seals your going to have to replace.

probably work out better to source a full engine and just drop it in.

Getting ripped off if your paying that much. I paid £114 for the cambelt kit, headgasket kit, headbolts, oil filter and i think an waterpump as well from the local motors factors. Thats for my 1.4 sport.

1.2 16v is chain drive. supposed to replace:
head gasket
valve stem oil seals
rocker gasket
timing chain
chain guides
timing case upper and lower gasket
head bolts
oil and filter.

then youve got water pump gasket, seals for the inlet manifold, exaust manifold.

they are just a shite engine

I always laugh when these people suggest that people who dont know too much about motors should 'just go out and do it' themselves. All that saying something like that's going to do is have people fucking their engines even more. Actually imagine someone who's never held a spanner in their life attempt a head gasket with just a haynes manual, if people think it's that easy then they don't have a clue. It's by no means a difficult task but it needs a certain amount of skill

Me and my girlfriends dad done my girlfriends one just by following a haynes manual. We even done the valve clearences.

I only said about doing it himself because he said its 'fucked' and is talking about a new car.

Its a cheap engine and car at the end of the day. It doesnt work anyway, best oppotunity to learn and possibly fix it yourself.

I'd get a cheap engine for the price of the list listed above. Get a mate who knows what he's doing and buy him a few beers for doing it or something. Help him out of course .

Tbh I'd rather try and fix an engine I know was good before than replace it with another that could have the same problem after 2 days
