How come Windows has only just prompted this update then? It checks for updates everyday but this has shown up for the first time today?

Could be any number of reasons TBH.

Example - my laptop and my wife's laptop run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, she had a prompt to install SP1 and I didn't.
