Just been handed a MacBook Air, which cannot read mail anymore...
Message viewer opens but can't open single e-mails, when trying to shut down getting the following message...
"The application Mail cancelled shutdown"
"To try again, quit Mail and choose Apple menu > Shut down."
Still unable to close Mail succesfully.
Any ideas, my Mac knowledge is VERY slim.

what happens when you try to open an email?
As for shutting down, sounds like you aren't quiting Mail

Have you worked out if its collecting mail correctly first? i.e. can it contact its pop3/imap/whatever server, auth, and list new emails?
Also I did a quick google about the error message you have been given and this is one of the possible solutions
quote: Go to mail Preferences -> General -> Check for new mail
Change your setting to 5 mts or higher. Or choose "manually"
When you try to quit, it could be active looking for new mail.

Mail window opens with blank screen, if you force quit Mail it will allow to shut down, but if you use the close Mail it wont allow shut down.
Happens again after rebooting, so only way to exit is force quit, but mail can't be read.

Does the user remember the last thing they did before it stopped working? did it ever work?

Mail is coming through, new e-mails constantly. Try open and get blank mail window.
Check for mail is set to 5mins.

Has been working, he's had it two months was working and tested as I set his mail up, going to try recreate his mail.
Start from scratch with his mail, disable this account and recreate, see how that works.
