OK, after yesterdays thread, decided to just try and turn my time machine back into a hard drive for the weekend - how do i go about this? as at present, PCs dont even recognise the HDD (Seagate 500GB jobby)

Does it show up under Device Manager or (under Admin Tools on Windows) Computer Management > Disk Management?
If it does then just select it and format. Otherwise have a look at Disc Util (?) on OSX and see if you can format it FAT/FAT16/FAT32.

done, thanks altho, disk utility didnt show up in my system preferences, only when searchign udner spotlight, oddly.

It's not part of system pref, instead it's under your Apps > System Tools (from what i remember) directory. Just make sure you formatted it as FAT (or one of the variations) otherwise Windows won't see it (once on Windows you can then format it NTFS if you wish).
