I'd say so

Mines got a crack on the screen but his has got pixel blobs on the bottom of the phone.

Ah right.

In answer to your original question, I'm not sure there is a free way of doing it TBH (not unless you have the software/cables/whatever to do it).

Just get it unlocked by your friendly independent phone shop for a tenner.

Ring up your network provider, tell them you are going abroad for a while and need to use a foreign sim card, they should do it for you.

Not over here, used to do it in Ireland every time i got a new phone, but people have told me they have done it here.
