Ive just taken my PS3 online so my best mate and I can play FIFA... I updated the squads through the menu but they still seem out of date - Cahill is not at Chelsea for example... do they only update every now and then?

Easiest way is do an online friendly then invite whoever you want to play. Or you can go to your player hub in the online section and invite them from there.
It will keep a record of the games you play eachother too as a mini season, points, goal difference etc.
