you have entered width x height in the boxes at the top?
if you have 50 x 50 it will always do a square etc...

Winner, never realised this always worked off a grid for perfect squares

just leave it blank and then you can crop to any proportions using the mouse.

There are three options - freeform, fixed size and fixed aspect. Just use freeform.
