Off to New York on Wednesday for a couple of days and my sister wants me to get her an iPad. Are they much cheaper over there to make it worthwhile and will she get any problems using it in the country?

My mates just bought one in Florida, $500 but not sure which one...
Go on the apple website, prices are on there and just work it put against the exchange rate. If customers find it boxed up you'll get charged import duty

They're only £300 for the smallest one anyway aren't they?

Find a way of getting to the state of Delaware and buy it from there as they've no sales tax in that state. It's about a 3 or 4 hour drive from NY so it's not a million miles away.

A 16GB with WiFi only is $499 (about £320) as opposed to £399 inc. VAT if you buy it in the UK (so you save nearly £80).

As for bringing it back, put the iPad in your hand luggage and post the empty box and manuals etc. via USPS with normal airmail or something so you won't get charged import VAT when you land back in the UK.

Seems a lot of hassle for £80 especially when £40 of that will have been spent on fuel for an 8 hour round trip, £10 on postage of the box/manuals and you'll have lost a day of your holiday.

Ship the packaging back, wtf? My sister bought one in April when we went to Florida and took the iPad on the plane with her and put the packaging (about twice the thickness of the iPad it's self so not much!) in the suitcase.

As said its only about £80 saving, £80 is £80 though

I'm fully aware he could put the box etc. in his suitcase - BUT if he were stopped by customs (even randomly for argument's sake) and they looked in his suitcase they would see the box in there, and the NEW iPad in his hand luggage.

It doesn't take a genius to work out he'd be in deep shit if he didn't declare this before going through the airport's 'anything to declare' section.

TBH I think it makes sense doing this with something more expensive like a MacBook Pro or something, not a £400 iPad because as said, it's only an £80 saving and you'd have to go to the hassle of buying it from a tax-free state.

My friend bought ours (16gb 3g ipad 2) over in Las Vegas when he went. We saved about £100 by buying it from the US... and to get around paying tax (UK import tax, not local US state tax), we asked him to throw away the box etc.. and bring it back over as if he'd taken it.

I'd say it's definately worth doing if you're already going over, but maybe not quite as worthwhile travelling to another state to save paying the local tax, unless you want to visit there.

Wouldn't the macbook's have a US keyboard layout? Or do Apple keyboards not change between US & UK?

They come with a UK keyboard (in the UK), but it's a slightly bastardised version of one which bares more resemblance to a US keyboard than anything else.

they dont sell Verizon in Apple stores

I got mine from 5th Avenue store last Christmas

Only thing you need to get is an UK USB plug adapter when you return

I tried getting one from the dodgey camera shops around new York but they either let me down or worked out more expensive

They work out about £100 cheaper than in the UK

Warrenty is international so no worries on that front either

Our ipad came with the US power adaptor, but you can just use a "figure of 8" power lead into it...

$499 + tax

I got 4 in Florida the other month came to $531 we had a decent exchange rate which came to £280ish each!

Depending on exchange rate they are cheaper, ebuyer had them at £385 last week.
