Some of you may have seen my previous thread on SSDs.

I now have my SSD, SATA cable and bracket for mounting.
I currently have a Dell Inspiron 531 with spec mentioned in previous thread.
How do I go about installing Windows and making this my primary drive and use my old c drive as simply storage?
Want to install iTunes on the SSD and music on the HDD. This do able or will it mess stuff up?

Fit the ssd, unplug/remove the standard hard drive. Install Windows as normal. Once installed, (google search any of the following for a how-to..) Disable hibernation, disable disk defrag and search indexing. Now you can turn off and fit your standard hard drive, it should still boot ok, but if not, go into bios and change the ssd to the 1st boot drive.
Once you're back into windows, disable the pagefile on the ssd, and enable it on the hdd.
For any programs, just change the drive letter on the install to whatever your hdd is in my computer, simples.
Someone might have a better explanation but I'm on my phone right now!

why would you want to move the page file to the (slow) hdd?

area that is set aside on the hdd to load things in, bit like memory, but as its allocated on the hdd its slow to access hence why if you have a fast ssd in youd want the page file on there so its quicker to access

Gotcha.
Well I succesfully managed to open my PC case, clean out the dust, find a suitable location for the SSD, used my Kingston brackets well only needed on actually. Hooked up the SATA cable and power cable. Then went into my garage to find my Windows 7 Disc and came out 1hr later empty handed and full of rage 
 Fail. Project on Hiatus!

Download it if you've got the serial key still... if not I'm sure there's a tool available so you can extract it from the registry.

I always put the pagefile on a mech drive because it saves read/writes on the ssd. With at least 4gb memory you can even disable the pagefile without problems. People have done tests with the page file on an ssd vs a hdd, and there's nigh-on no difference at all, so saving writes on an ssd is worth it to me!

I don't really know why people bother with the page file stuff on SSDs.
The drive/your computer will become obsolete before you've reached the limits of writing to the device anyway.
Just a load of Internet bullshit as usual. Also, if you've got say 4GB or 8GB or RAM and a dedicated graphics card you probably won't even need a page file anyway unless you are constantly using some resource hungry apps or games in Windows/whatever OS you have installed.

On the subject of SSD's, does anyone else have a pair in a raid0?
I do, and unfortunatly, you loose the trim feature, but I understand intels storage drivers 11.5 are on the way which includes trim for raided SSDs.
Just wish it would hurry up.

there will be differences, if there are writes and reads there will be differences

Follow that guide if you are going to install Windows 7 from scratch on the SSD. To get to that command prompt during setup, press shift - F10 when it comes up with the screen asking you to choose language/country etc:

Possibly is bullshit, but I've done it and not had any problems.
