Author booting from ubuntu live cd on a macbook pro?

just got round to burning a ubuntu live cd, when i hold C on my macbook it loads to a black screen with flashing white underscore. any ideas?

That's strange, if you leave it it doesn't load? What should happen is a screen comes up with the macintosh hd and whatever disc you have in, click the one you want and away you go.
Try resetting the nvram by pressing option - cmd, p & r on startup, hold it til you hear the chime again. Then try again.

what do i press to get that screen? i thought it was just c to load from cd and d to load from disk drive

hold down option key while booting to get drive select screen

nope, just shows the sad, no cd listed but its spinning up
