I've got an LG home cinema system with a 1 main output for HDMI to the TV and 4 inputs for HDMI into the home cinema system.
I've got an xbox and soon to be SKY HD am I right in saying I can connect them 2 to the cinema system which will then provide the main output to the TV?
My TV has 5 inputs for HDMI but be easier to do it through my cinema system.

From the tv to the surround sound so if i watch a film on TV ect it goes through the system, guessing as ill now be using sky which will run through the system via HDMI it will cut out the need for a optical cable?

Dolby 5.1 will only work over HDMI when the software update is fully rolled out and your box meets the criteria for the update.

If it doesnt then only way to get surround / dolby is via the optical output.

Ah ok so am I better off just running a HDMI from the SKY box to the TV instead of going through the surround sound box as I wont always use the 5.1 if just watching standard TV so saves me having to have the unit on just for the picture?
Hopefully my box will come with the update then

Everything runs through the amp on mine.
PS3/Xbox/SkyHD/AppleTV ---HDMI---> Amp
TV ---HDMI---> Amp
SkyHD ---Optical---> Amp

Same here, apart from the sky, that just goes to TV. CBA having reciever on all the time, if i want 5.1 when watching sky just switch to optical.

Snap, seems most convenient way to do it tbh, just turn the amp on when watching something in 5.1.

Plus i dont think HDMI outputs in 5.1 from skybox, only optical.
Hows you setup work Nath if your HDbox is inputted two ways? Can you choose what video and what audio inputs are used?

Auto chooses I think. So most TV stuff isn't Dolby but Movies are. Can't remember the last time I used my TV speakers. I've got a universal remote that turns my TV, Amp, and Sky box on with one button.

It didn't used to but its being pushed out to most boxes at the moment. It started around 5/6 weeks ago. Ours got updated 2 weeks ago and now will put 5.1 or 2.0 if 5.1 is not there down HDMI. Just makes live easier as I can now get rid of an extra cable I don't need.
Now if only my Onkyo amp would do Audio processing on HDMI AND pass-through then it would be even better
